New Journalists Union of Malawi promises to fight for better conditions for  media practitioners

Journalists Union of Malawi (JUMA) has new office bearers that will steer the grouping for the next two years with a clear mandate to advocate for better working conditions in media industry.

The new committee was ushered in on Thursday following an annual general meeting held in Liwonde during.

After the campaigning and canvassing was done, Lilongwe-based media consultant Mtheto Lungu was re-elected President and will be deputized by Zodiak Broadcasting Station’s Emmanuel Chibwana.

Charles Nkula was re-elected for the post of General Secretary while MacCarthy Mwalwimba emerged winner to be vice.

The post of Treasurer General went to Nathan Majawa.

Committee members are media consultant Taonga Botolo, Joy Group’s Star Nyanja, Times Group’s Mandy Pondani and journalist Isaac Kambwiri.

At the meeting, the union’s delegates also elected chapter leaders in all the three regions of the country and the new chapter committees are  being headed by MIJ fm’s Mwai Mtumodzi, seasoned reporter Dickson Kashoti and Wanangwa Munthali representing the south, centre and north respectively.

The Journalists Union of Malawi is a legitimate union established by journalists to look into issues of rights of journalists at the workplace.

The union is now an affiliate of the Malawi Congress of Trade union and registered with the Ministry of Labor.

The union enjoys support of membership and commands a strong membership from across the country.

Its mandate is to negotiate for better working conditions for all journalists as well as student journalists. Currently it has a national governing committee with chapter leadership.

Kikikiki! This must be a wacky outfit! All the journos I know in this Union are madcap characters.. Mtheto Lungu, Charles Mkula, Dickson Kashoti wooow! What a crazy combination!
