Isn’t it time the tobacco growers were encouraged by the government to switch crops to food production? The number of people using tobacco is falling all the time as people are discouraged from smoking for health reasons. However, people will always need food to eat, so why not produce more food and import less, thus saving money for the country. It is a no-brainer.

Nyasatimes!!! U remember last month u carried a story in which u reported that all of the countries traditional tobacco buyers had stopped buying tobacco for this season and that TCC had implored with three other companies (a Chinese, Egyptian…) to buy the remaining kgs? What’s your point Karrim? Is there over-production? Answer in my view is yes because we know that some of the leaf from last growing season is still available, a fact which you seem to agree with in your comment. The buyers who are still on the floors, i.e. the Chinese, Egyptians, etc, have they promised to buy all the 165 million kgs produced? What is it that is utterly false about this story? Mind you this is September and the next season is just around the corner. You seem to know that there is over-production, which is what this story… Read more »
