No toilets for guardians at Nsanje District Hospital: ‘Nearest bush used’

There are no toilets for scores of guardians at Nsanje District Hospital a development which has forced them to resort to the nearest bush to answer the call of nature, Nyasa Times has learnt.

We have established that one of the two toilets that served the guardians is full while the other fell down.

Chairperson for the hospital’s guardians Smart Mkwaipi told Nyasa Times that they are at high risk of suffering from diseases such as Cholera.

“The situation is very bad since we are forced to use the nearest bush. We would like to urge the hospital administration to come in immediately,” said Mkwaipi.

A visit by the Nyasa Times team to the hospital recently confirmed the use of a bush, close to where the guardians prepare their food and that of their patients, as an alternative toilet.

But Nsanje District Hygiene Officer expressed ignorance about the lack of toilets.

“I was away on holiday. I will find out,” he said.

Nsanje is one of the districts in the country where waterborne diseases are always high in the rainy season due to the flooding of the Shire River.
