Mighty Be Forward Wanderers avoided what would have been the mightiest upset in Mzuzu on Saturday to beat Chilumba Barracks 1-0 and reach the quarter-finals of the Carlsberg Cup.
Mapopa Kaunda nicked the win for Wanderers after 57 minutes to ease pressure on Wanderers coach Elia Kananj.
Kananji did not hide his excitement after the final whistle of a hard-fought encounter .
“I am very happy with the win,” said Kananji.
“We deserved it,” he added.
The blues were in danger of an embarrassing cup exit when the unheralded hosts dominated the game mostly in the first half.
Wanderers coach conceded to have played under pressure and that Chilumba tried to equalise.
The Lali Lubani Road boys lacked cohesion for long periods of the game.
In form Wanderers goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa frustrated the home side when he saved many would-be goals and was declared man of the match.
“We are disappointed we lost this match,” Chilumba coach Steven Kambanja said. “We could have easily taken this match to post-match penalties but the referee was not on our side,’’ said Kambanja.
