Nyasa BB move to within a point of KB: Malawi TNM Super League

Nyasa Big Bullets did more than enough to frustrate title contenders MAFCO Football Club with a 2nil victory at the Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The victory moved them within a point of current league leaders Kamuzu Barracks who thumped Azam Tigers 3-1 earlier on Saturday.

The much touted Bullets and MAFCO affair was delayed for almost 25 minutes following heavy rains in Blantyre forcing several spectators to wait for a late kick off while others thought the game would be post-poned. However, officials of both teams were seen earlier inspecting the pitch before agreeing that the match be played despite the rains.

Knowing how vital it would be getting maximum points at the expense of a fellow title contender, both teams showed signs of hunger as they registered equal shots on goals just 10 minutes into the first half. However, it was Bullets who got the best chance two minutes later with Mussa Manyenje getting his name on the score-sheet.

The Salima based soldiers could have scored just a few minutes past the half-hour mark only for Yamikani Fodya to save the peoples team from conceding what could have been an equalizing goal for MAFCO. The scores remained the same up until half time.

However, soon after the recess, Muhammad Sulumba ended his goal drought to score the peoples team second goal that appeared to have killed off MAFCO’s hope of a fight back. The former Wanderers striker was close from getting a second on the day a few minutes later only for the MAFCO goalkeeper to deny him a brace.

2-nil the final score-line, a result that moved Bullets to within a point of current league leaders Kamuzu Barracks who seem to be enjoying a rich vein of form.

Speaking to Nyasa Times after the final whistle, Bullets Coach Lloyd Nkhwazi said the win sends a big signal to the rest of the title contenders that his team is ready to challenge for the title despite being inconsistent in form.

“We are slowly pushing and the win today against MAFCO is a huge boost to our title hopes. We are ready to challenge and protect our title. Apart from celebrating that we are getting close to the title, today’s victory over MAFCO is a sweet revenge to the side that booted us out of the Carlsberg Cup,” said Nkhwazi.

For his part, MAFCO Coach Thomas Maloya conceded defeat but denied to rule out his side from challenging for the title.

“We commend Bullets for getting a result over this strong team. We were affected by the pitch which was too heavy to play on as a result of the rains. However, I don’t want to take this as a scapegoat to our loss. We hope to regroup once we return home and we will still push and see where we can finish on,” said Maloya.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Blue Eagles title hopes were dented by Azam Tigers following a 1 nil loss at Nankhaka ground. Moyale and Dwangwa played out to a goalless draw while Premier Bet Wizards forced Silver Strikers to another stalemate.
