Off the wall of Dickson Kashoti: Take Chiumia’s apology with a large pinch of salt, Malawi ‘life president’ nonsense must stop

Someone yesterday asked a very good question on his Facebook wall; how old was minister of Sports and Culture Grace Obama Chiumia when Malawians aggressively and massively fought against the life presidency of Kamuzu Banda in 1992 and 1993? Chiumia’s deliberate slip of the tongue suggesting that President Peter Mutharika should be life president is ill-timed and misplaced, probably the most stupid thing anyone can suggest to Malawians in this era.

Chiumia with President Mutharika

Chiumia with President Mutharika

Three cabinet ministers Aaron Gadama, Dick Matenje, Twaibu Sangala and MP David Chiwanga are among those who died in their quest to curtail the life presidency of Kamuzu. Chakufwa Chihana and Bakili Muluzi are among those who risked their lives to fight the life presidency of Kamuzu.

So, for Mrs Chiumia to suggest that APM should be the life president, whether it was just a joke or mere political rhetoric or something else is a bad joke and bad political rhetoric. She should be telling her boss how to fix this broken, unrepairable and chaotic economy. She should be telling her boss that whilst the president and herself have electricity and water 24/7, thanks to tax payers, the rest of the nation is plunged in total darkness without water 24/7.

When Lilongwe had electricity the whole day on Sunday, it was news all over. Mrs Chiumia should not get excited with her job as a cabinet minister. She is not the first minister and she is not the last minister. These positions are temporary and one day she will find us down here, she will never stay on top forever. The body language of the Democratic Progressive Party officials and cadres show that given a chance, they would have APM rule forever as life president. If you post here a matter of fact for instance the state of our economy or electricity and water, they come with full force defending the indefensible although they themselves are in darkness as they write and their toilets have no water.

It started as a rumour that Bakili Muluzi wanted to stand for third term, then an idiot regional governor said it as mere political rhetoric before the issue was brought in parliament to amend the Republican Constitution; thank God the vote was defeated by three votes, the symbol of the powerful divine power of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit otherwise Bakili would have been at the helm up to now.

This is why we take her apology with a pinch of salt, we think the president and the cabinet sat somewhere and discussed this matter. They might have sent Mrs Chiumia to test the waters. This is why we are saying NO to this stupid idea, Malawi was not created for the Mutharikas to rule forever just as it was not created for Kamuzu, Bakili or Joyce Banda to rule for life.

This nonsense must stop now!

PEOPLE FROM THE NORTHERN REGION YOU ARE A DISGRACE. IT ALL STARTED WITH ALEKE BANDA. HE MADE KAMUZU PRESIDENT FOR LIFE AND THE SAME KAMUZU THREW HIM INJAIL FOR 12 YEARS. THEN IN 2003 ANOTHER STUPID NORTHERNER KHWAULI MSISKA CAME WITH THE OPEN TERMS BILL IN PARLIAMENT TO ALLOW (NOT BINGU) BUT FOOLISH MULUZI TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT AS HE WISHED. HAS KHWAULI MSISKA EVER REFLECTED WHAT HIS STUPID MOTION IN PARLIAMENT WOULD HAVE BROUGHT TO MALAWIANS?

THIS IS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD THINK USING THEIR BRAINS AND NOT ASSES. IF YOU ARE A MINISTER, JUST THANK GOD AND STOP SPOILING OUR COUNTRY SIMPLY BECOZ YOU JUST WANT TO APPRECIATE FOR YOUR MINISTERIAL POST.

Once a stupid Tonga always a stupid Tonga, no two ways about it. This Tonga woman should be ashamed of herself and her nonsense for the rest of her life.

The utterances of people who are on positions which they never expected to be. What else can Chiumia do in life if she were kicked out as minister? People dide fighting against this Life Presidency issue of Kamuzu the dictator and those lives don’t matter to her? What a shame!!!!

Bingo! You nailed it Off the Wall. May be she was a teenager when we voted in 1992!

To believe that what Chiumia said was a slip of the tongue is a palpable betrayal of one’s thought process.
. . . Ever heard that, “In veno veritus”? – Latin Poverb, for “There is truth in wine”?
Suggesting that a person under the influence of alcohol is more likely to speak their hidden thoughts and desires? Chiumia’s sentiments are nowhere near the parameters of a tongue-slip definition.
    ………………………………………………………………………….
. . . It would somewhat make sense pakanakhala kuti pali chomwe chikuchitika but what has APM done so far, for Chiumia to betray her mind with a thought of APM as a life president?
. . . Look at Paul Kagame. We are made to believe that his people asked him to go nowhere; and reports just reaching me now, have it that he could rule Rwanda until 2034, mutatis mutandis. But this didnt just come from nowhere. Kagame demonstrated to be everything that Rwanda needs. This notwithstanding . . .
. . . Do we think that people will not get tired of him, some day?
. . . Ever wondered why even the best joke stops being funny when cracked repeatedly and for long? Ok, perhaps you are not a fun of jokes. But, ever wondered why even the best song becomes boring if playing repeatedly and for long?
    . . . Change is necessary!

Ministers like Chiumia, live by appeasing their master, the president. I cant see any qualities of a minister in this idiotic Chiumia, life president, where, in her village? Imagine continuing with the current leadership, what will Malawi become in next 6 years? Severely impoverished, and starving state. Food, water and electricity are already in very limited supply, and the government is mute on these critical issues. Madam Chiumia, probably you smoked chamba, cant believe you are sane.

  8. be humane says:

MR. Kashoti, professional writing do not use words like stupid idea, this nonsense must stop, idiot governor. This erodes objectivity of your writing. Thats is why you have gone off track in your article. You stopped responding to Chiumia’s sentiments and started the usual problems you see in Malawi about economic mishaps. Mukamalemba ndizifukwa, your article betrays you coz you think you are grabbing every opportunity to air your views. You have been a good writer all along but partisan politics is eating you like it did to Dr. Hertherwick Ntaba the so called computer but was reduced to calculator. Do you want to end that Way????? Please for your intelligence do better

It’s off the wall. Facebook post. Just in case you missed it. On facebook, mostly one uses informal writing just to put across what’s in his/her mind. Take no offence

        . . . Eviews . . .
Whether its off or on or under or above the wall; Kashoti is the same person just as a crocodile is; whether in or outside water. We may therefore wish to accept that Kashoti misled himself into believing that using such pedestrian language as ” . . . one day she will find us down here.” i.e. “Tsiku lina adzatifuna”; and such vulgar and tasteless ghetto words as “stupid” or “nonsense”; would earn him a top notch in the race of patriotism.
. . . People should avoid vulgar language not because it’s forbidden by their employer (newspapers) but because they, themselves; effortlessly believe that being vulgar is not cool.
. . . Know also that there is a crystal-clear difference between being informal and being vulgar.

NO WONDER AZIMAYI AKUMPOTO NDI ACHIBWANA CHA NCHOMBO. MWAYIWALA CATHERINE GOTANI ZA MIDNIGHT 6? KUPUSA KWA PITALA TIONERA PAMENEPA. ANENAPO CHANI NGAKHALE GRACE APEPESA?

  10. Baba wa Boyi says:

    What exactly did she say?

Because according to this article she said “President Peter Mutharika should be life president” Did she say that?

If she did say that, it can not be explained away as a slip of the tongue.

But like always, Nyasa Times likes to paraphrase in such a way as to tell a story they believe we want to hear.

Nyasa Times has on many occasions given verbatim statements by people.

If what Chiumia said is a big issue, put it here verbatim so we can make our own minds if indeed it is an issue, which I doubt.

That is why the US has the Fifth amendment, There is no issue with words that will not amount to anything. It is called freedom of speech, oh I forget, freedom of speech in Malawi is not for politicians in government, but only opposition.

Why don’t you just name this Dickson’s status updates?
