The announcement was made during the final game between Diamonds Sisters and Complex Tigresses, which saw Diamonds being crowned champions with a 36-33 victory.

OG Plastic deputy general manager Francis Mponela said the company will no longer continue sponsoring the league due to other commitments. He did not elaborate.

“We will no longer be able to come back because we have other commitments. We have been sponsoring the league for a period of five years and pulling out now is very sad,” he said.

League chairperson Khungikile Matiya described the news as step back in the development of netball in this country.

Matiya said this will affect not only Southern Region League but Malawi Queens since most of the players play for the national team.

She was however, optimistic that they will talk with the company to rescind its decision.

“It is very sad but we are optimistic that they can rescind their decision. We will try to talk with their management and hoping for a positive answer,” said Matiya.

OG Group Companies came to sponsor the League after Real Life Insurance pulled out.

We need Malawi corporate companies of great repute to start doing corporate social responsibility for real. I cant believe companies like NICO, National Bank, SOBO etc dont sponsor any sports club in the country. Executives of these companies the only CSR they do is imbibe at sports club and sitting on the @@@%%& and be spectators. This should change, imagine a foreign company with no office in Malawi like Be Forward sponsoring a football team here, shameful, we love idleness and watching life passby in Malawi

If OG Issa is out – good for the part the company has played the past 5 years, we need new sponsors to come in, I hope the new sponsor will be the best ones who will beat the outgoing, that is possible.

Basket ball – is one of the top flag carrier of Malawi, therefore sponsorship of the girls and the team is paramount and I request that to whoever feels that the need of sports in Malawi.

Sport clubs and ministry must now turn sports into money making tool, and not only waiting for sponsorships – the companies when coming in , they are there for company advertisement therefore they must be charged based on the time slot, media houses must also be charged to air the particular matches. Clubs must sale the tickets, promote the matches pay the media houses and be active in fund raising activities – osangokhala mphwiiiiii in the offices waiting for free chambo, there is no free coffee.
