Old Mutual, Mzuzu University award best maths students

The contest is organised annually by the University’s Department of Mathematics with funding from the Insurance Company.

This year’s competition worth K10 million pooled together 168 students from 60 secondary schools.

“This year the competition drew participants from 16 districts but our target is that next year we should cover all the districts in Malawi,” said Vincent Mkandawire, Regional Manager for Old Mutual Company for North and Central regions.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Mzuzu University Dr Loveness Kaunda expressed gratitude to the company for the material support towards the annual event.

“This year we were pleasantly surprised that sponsorship towards the annual competition had been raised from K7Million to K10 million,” she disclosed. “This competition is very helpful to the secondary school students as it helps remove negative perceptions students tend to have towards mathematics.”

Mkandawire stressed the importance of promoting mathematics learning in the country, saying the subject is a basis for many other science disciplines that drive the economic development of the county.

This year’s contest saw Daniel Mkandawire from Nkhotakota Secondary School emerge as best student, followed by Steven Mayendayenda  from Dedza secondary school and Waleke Vincent  from Bishop Mtekateka secondary school.

The overall winner went away with K70 000 cash, a certificate and a scientific calculator as his prize.

In the category of schools, the best school was Mary Mount Girls followed by St Mary’s Girls and Kasungu Secondary school in that order.

The competition involves a series of mathematics tests at Mzuzu University campus on from where semi-finalists, finalists and then winners are selected. –Additional reporting by Pius Nyondo – Nyasa Times.

This was supposed to be covered by all media houses from day 1 of the competition. To the contrary, only few did this, to them this is not news worthy but when a politician coughs, urinates eish you find them scrambling for an interview. This is why Malawi will not develop!
