One dead, two missing after boat capsized in Lake Malawi

An 18-year-old man in Nkhotakota has died while two others are feared dead after a boat they were peddling capsized in Lake Malawi.

Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said according to survivor Petro Chirwa (40), four people including his deceased brother Vumiliya Mang’ango (18), Phonera Biliati (40) and his son Misheck Biliati went for fishing in Lake Malawi during morning hours of April 29, 2014 when the incident occured.

“Chirwa also said that whilst they were in the course of fishing, they were hit by Mwera winds which forced their boat to capsize.

“Following this development, Chirwa struggled for his own life and managed to swim up to the shore where he informed Village Headman Kapanga who immediately reported the matter to Nkhotakota Police Station concerning the missing of the three people,” he said.

Lubrino said the police and the members of the community rushed and organized a search party for the three up until on May 1, 2014 when Mang’ango was discovered floating dead on the lake.

“Postmortem conducted has revealed that the deceased died due to suffocation. Searching for the remaining two is still in progress to trace their whereabouts,” he said.

This is a second incident in Nkhotakota within this month as two brothers died again after the canoe they were travelling in capsized in Lake Chilingali.
