One killed, 10 injured in Zomba accident: Driver was learner, says Malawi Police
One person has died on the spot and 10 were rushed to Zomba Central Hospital after the driver of the vehicle lost control and hit them near Mpondabwino Market in Zomba on Wednesday morning.
According to the eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at around 7 am soon after Likangala Bridge as the vehicle was heading to town from Mpunga Trading Centre.
“It swept the people including two primary school pupils who were walking along the road and crushed into a house. The driver, who is a lady escaped with minor injuries,” said one of the eyewitnesses in an interview with Nyasa Times.
Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude identified the deceased as a Mrs. Chiwozi from Chiputa Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in the district.
He also identified the driver as Matilda Osman, aged 33 years and comes from Bulaimana Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in the district.
She was driving a Toyota Corolla whose registration number is MJ 6555 and has also been badly damaged.
Said Nyaude in an interview: “It is true the driver lost control of the vehicle soon after crossing Likangala Bridge. The injured people were immediately rushed to Zomba Central Hospital where one is at the intensive care unit (ICU).”
Police spokesman said the driver was a leaner and had no valid driving licence.
