Road carnage during Xmas

Meanwhile, police has disclosed that 11 Epeople have died in 14 road accidents in Malawi during the Christmas festive season.

Police publicist Nicholas Gondwa said the figure represents a 56 per cent increase in road accidents from last year.

He said the increase in road accidents this year compared to same time last year due to increased days of Chrismas holiday this year.

“This might be the case because this year people started celebrating Christmas on Thursday throughout the weekend up to Monday because Christmas Boxing holiday fell on Saturday and the holiday was observed on Monday,” Gondwa said.

The government this year announced that Christmas Boxing holiday had been reinstated.

Gondwa said last year, the country had nine road accidents. He said the central region had nine road accidents, the eastern region recorded three, the north had two and the south had none.

He said the country experienced one serious crime in Bangwe, Blantyre where a young man stabbed a fellow young man after picking up a quarrel at a drinking joint.

Gondwa asked Malawians to be extra careful as they celebrate the new year on Thursday and Friday.

They continue to send corrupt traffic police officers on the roads and maintain corrupt officers at Road Traffic. They are happy with the bad roads and they continue to celebrate construction of substandard roads in the country. The days of single carriage roads are long gone. Sadly the new and existing roads cannot be… Read more »

The Government needs to introduce new tough measures to deter drunken driving or over speeding. One such measure is to administer justice within days by shooting convicts using a firing squad at an open space like the three stadia that the country has ie Mzuzu, Blantyre and Lilongwe
