Overspeeding ESCOM vehicle kills forestry officer, injures police officer

Police in Malawi’s eastern district of Machinga have arrested a driver working for Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) for killing the forestry officer and injuring the police officer after he failed to apply brakes of his over speeding vehicle at Liwonde roadblock Sunday night.

Public Relations Officer for Machinga police station Andrew Mayawo says the driver Sunduzwayo Chaula who was driving Toyota Camry MZ 7465 was coming from Mangochi Turn-off, towards Liwonde Township.

“The incident happened at around half past eleven last night when Chaula failed to apply brakes as he was approaching the roadblock and hit the two in the process,” said Mayawo.

He said the forestry officer David Polera died on spot while the police officer sub inspector Francis Chisale is admitted at Machinga district hospital.

Mayawo says Chaula comes from Stony Vikhumbo village Traditional Authority T/A Mbelwa in Mzimba district while the deceased Polera hailed from Nkula village T/A Nkula in Machinga district and Francis Chisale hails from Chigoma village T/A Mkanda in Mchinji district.

Mayawo says the driver is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of reckless driving and manslaughter.
