People’s Party set for official launch Saturday

The People’s Party (PP), which was officially registered by the Registrar of Political Parties last month, is set for official launch on Saturday at Lions Nyambadwe Primary School Lower Ground in Blantyre.

According to an unofficial programme, the main speaker will be the party’s president Joyce Banda.

Banda, who is also the state vice president, formed PP  following her unceremonious expulsion from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of president Bingu wa Mutharika where she served as first vice president.

She, alongside with Mzimba legislator Khumbo Kachali, were accused of “forming parallel party structures” but it later transpired that in fact, Banda did not approve of Professor Peter Mutharika, the president’s young brother, to be the automatic DPP presidential candidate in the 2014 general elections.

Joyce Banda: To launch People's Party

“We are finally set for the big launch on Saturday. We initially wanted to use  Njamba Park but city assembly officials in connivance with other authorities didn’t give us permission and we moved the big party to Nyambadwe Primary School Lions Ground,” said PP’s national publicity director Stephen Mwenye.

He told Nyasa Times in an interview on Tuesday that a final programme is not yet ready but said tentatively the programme shall start at 10:00 in the morning.

“It will be a mother of all launches; we have extended official invitations to everyone including the DPP, UDF, Petra, MCP and all political parties in Malawi,” he said.

“We have invited various Churches, our Muslim friends and other religions. We are inviting all the people in the Southern Region to learn how the PP is poised to change the social, economic and political landscape in the country when it forms the next government in 2014,” Mwenye said.

He dislcosed that there would be similar events in the northern, central and eastern regions on dates to be communicated later.

Meanwhile, the launch in Nyambadwe will be preceded by “special service of worship” on Friday, August 26, 2011 at KCC Plaza in Chigumula Township in the city.

According to the coordinator of the event, Reverend Malani Mtonga, the theme of the Friday special prayers will be “Unlocking Hidden Potentials.”

“We shall pray for nation of Malawi; we shall ask the Almighty to give the PP president the required wisdom, peace and joy; we shall pray for all executive members and all members to hold to the party; we shall seek God’s guidance as we undertake this milestone of lunching People’s Party,” said Reverend Mtonga.

He added that he envisaged that the inter-denominational prayers would be attended by all PP executive committee members.

Among the choir groups expected to dish out melodious gospel music at the function include the famous Anglican Voices.
