Peter Mutharika returns to Malawi Sunday: Plans nationwide rallies

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) interim president, Professor Peter Mutharika  is planning a grand return from his two months visit to Europe and United States of America where he went to fund-raise for his 2014 campaign. He returns  on Sunday February 10, 2013 f, the party has confirmed.

DPP  is mobilising supporters to welcome him at the Airport and then proceed in a huge procession from airport to his home.

Mutharika left the country in December last year for United States) where it was alleged would meet President Barack Obama only for the party to dismiss the meeting as a hoax.

DPP Publicity Secretary, Nicholas Dausi told Nyasa Times in an interview on Tuesday, Mutharika will arrive in the country on Sunday before embarking on national wide whistle-stop rallies to sell out his candidature and woo support for his presidential bid during DPP’s convention this April.

“We are currently finalizing the program for the public rallies but everything will be set by Sunday when our leader arrives in the country from Europe,” Dausi said.

Among other areas, the DPP 2014 presidential hopeful is expected to visit, include Ngabu in Chikhwawa, Mwanza and Mulanje, some parts of northern and central region as well as the eastern region.

However, Mutharika is expected to miss out on the opening of forthcoming meeting of Parliament to be officially opened by President Joyce Banda on Friday.

Since he left, news went viral on social media as many party fanatics touted the Obama meeting as an underscore for young Mutharika’s trip to USA before he proceeded to United Kingdom (UK).

But Dausi told Nyasa Times last month, the meeting was just one fabricated story which the party would not love to be associated with.

“What I know is that he left for a personal and private trip. He did not disclose details of the trip to the party or anybody. The meeting with President Barack Obama should be a story some people fabricated. As a party we never said anything about that alleged meeting,” Dausi told Nyasa Times.

Collaborated information indicates that the DPP 2014 presidential hopeful embarked on the global tour just to raise funds for his 2014 presidential bid campaign with the party in the dark over the alleged Obama meeting.

The information indicates that Mutharika had been holding meetings with various ‘money-spinners’ in UK, USA and China to sell out his candidature and win their favor to finance his campaign with some of them promising to buy the party helicopters.

Meanwhile, some DPP members have criticized the party’s executive committee for its continuous exploits to overshadow those bidding for the presidency including Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda by highlighting much of Mutharika.

DPP is set to spend about K65 million to hold its convention from April 17 to 19 in Lilongwe to elect eligible executive committee with Mutharika tipped to lead the party in the 2014 elections.

The race for the presidential seat is becoming intense as Chimunthu Banda as well as Henry Mussa is reportedly set to compete with Mutharika for the position.

Last year Mutharika, tipped to be a likely winner, if elections are to be held today, in a survey conducted by Nation on Sunday followed by UDF president, Atupele Muluzi and PP president, Joyce Banda.
