Updated: Police release Malawi army deputy commander Supuni
Malawi Police in the wee hours of Thursday arrested deputy commander of Malawi Defence Force , Lieutenant General Griffin Supuni for allegedly assaulting cops after robbery at his residence in Lilongwe, Nyasa Times understands. He has since been released.
Police picked Supuni to Area 18 cell, Lilongwe in the morning.
Sources say Supuni was arrested after one of neighbours in Area 43 was under a robbery attack and after the incident he came out and with and some neighbours allegedly started beating the G4S guard from the robbed house.
When Police turned up, Supuni allegedly assaulted one of them who retaliated and later arrested him .
National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo was coy to comment on the matter.
She could not confirm nor deny if the police were detaining the army deputy commander.
Malawi Army’s spokesman, Maj. Kakhuta Banda, could not immediately comment.

Let’s be factual. This Supuni was not arrested as a deputy army commander but a civilian suspected of having committed a crime under the laws of Malawi. The issue of the Army and Police fighting does not and should never arise! This should not be misunderstood otherwise we are nurturing chaos in this peaceful country.
