Police commends  Eastern Region Chiefs for helping in fighting crime

The Commissioner of Police for Eastern Region Mrs Effie Kaitano has commended Traditional leaders in the region for their tireless efforts in the fight against crime including cases of abduction, killing and exhuming of albinos.

Kaitano made the commendations on Wednesday at a Community Policing Regional Executive Committee Meeting held in Zomba.

The meeting was held at a crucial time when people living with albinism have been harassed and abused through abductions, killings and their graves exhumed.

According to Eastern Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Joseph Sauka, a total of 31 cases to do involving people living with albinism were registered. In the Eastern Region since the practice came into lime light.

But Kaitano expressed gratitude that Police with assistance from Traditional Leaders and communities have finally won the battle against abuse of people with albinism.

“Traditional leaders have played a big role in fighting these cases and I urge them to continue. Despite the fact that the region is winning the battle on cases to do with people living with albinism this does not mean that they should relax,” said Kaitano adding that Police will continue
tightening security in the region.

On general crimes, Kaitano said Police in the region has managed to deal with violent and serious crimes as most of the cases reported are minor ones.

She also hailed Eastern Region Police Traffic Department for being strict in discharges their duties that have yielded positive result leading to the decrease of 3.8 percent in road accidents.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Kaitano said as Police, they have already put in place strong measures to ensure the general public is provided with tight security.

“Both our uniformed and civilian Police officers will be deployed to all crime prone areas. On road safety, Traffic Police Officers will be on the road day and night” said Kaitano.

Speaking at the same meeting, Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region Executive Committee Mr Dan Phiri said that security is not a one man job and therefore appealed to the general public to join hands with the Police in the fight against crime in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the Traditional Leaders, Senior Chief Kawinga of Machinga district assured the Police that as Traditional Leaders, they will see to it that there is security in
their respective areas.

“Nothing will go unnoticed in our areas and those who have evil intentions will have no room in the region as every chief has empowered his subjects on security and has men who are always on the lookout,” said the Chief.

Commenting on issues of albinism, the Senior Chief said he is happy that the laws have changed following a consultative meeting Chiefs had with the Malawi Law Commission.

“We are happy that those found guilty will feel the pinch as sentences have been revised upwards and this will deter would be offenders,” he said.

Eastern Region covers Zomba, Balaka, Machinga and Mangochi and the meeting brought together Traditional leaders, Community Policing Chairpersons, Community Policing Coordinators and Officer In-charge Stations.
