DPP plays down accusations of sponsoring MCP rift
Malawi’s governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has down played rumours that it is sponsoring individuals to stir conflicts in the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
MCP secretary-general Chris Daza accuse the DPP of having a hand in the group which is pressing party leader John Tembo to resign and also agitating for electing a leader of the opposition in parliament when the current standing orders of the House stipulates that a leader of a largest opposition party holds the title.
Tembo, under current circumstances, is expected to be leader of opposition but Ishmael Chafukila who was fired as spokesman as he is baying for Tembo’s blood moved a motion to waive the standing order and allow elections.
The matter has since been referred to the legal affairs committee of parliament by the Speaker to examine.
Daza accused DPP of instigating the crisis in the MCP.
But spokesman of the ruling party who is also chief political aide of President Bingu wa Mutharika has rebutted the claims.
“That’s most laughable,” said Ntaba of Daza’s claims.
“There is a crisis of leadership there,” Ntaba said of his former party.
“The members of parliament have lost confidence in the leadership. Even some of the ordinary members have lost confidence in the leadership hence they were demonstrating (for Tembo to resign),” said the DPP publicist.
“There is a clear indication that there is a crisis of confidence. [But] Tembo wants to hang on to dictatorial ways,” Ntaba pointed out.
“The DPP has nothing to do with that,” he maintained.
However, MCP officials insist DPP has sponsored the MCP “rebels” with money to destabilize the already weakened opposition.
