Goodall denies campaigning for Peter Mutharika
Minister of Local Government, Goodall Gondwe has denied reports that he spearheaded the campaign for Justice Minister Prof Peter Mutharika to succeed his brother, Bingu wa Mutharika as Head of State in 2014.
Gondwe is reported to have told ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) officials in the northern region to back the candidature of the president’s brother in 2014.
But in an interview with Capital Radio Straight Talk presenter Brian Banda, Gondwe said he would not be interested to canvass votes for the next president.
“Selling Peter Mutharika. Why should I sell Peter Mutharika?” wondered Gondwe when asked about the speech he made to DPP officials in the north.
“Show me the evidence of me saying so,” he added in a programme aired on Sunday.
“I was in the north with Peter Mutharika and others where we did two things. One was to take part in his public lecture that he gave on the constitution. I thought it was a very good lecture. Myself, infact I chaired it.”
Gondwe who is also leader of government in parliament confirmed that Mutharika issue was discussed at a party regional conference in the north.
“Then the northern region DPP decided they were going to have a meeting and that time the next day they were more concerned with finding out how the north were going to benefit from the budget and for the is minister of finance to explain that. And I was asked to talk about local government what is likely going to happen.
“It so happen that Peter Mutharika was there and he talked about the law at that time and people in the north were expressing their views how they want to deal with 2014, that’s true.”
He said politicians are now repositioning themselves now that President Mutharika would not be seeking another term in 2014.
“People are preparing a lot of people’s candidate in 2014,” he added, “UDF there about five candidates now.”
He said DPP has not advanced in presidential campaign like the opposition UDF.
“UDF you actually have people campaigning against each other,” said Gondwe. “I do know that people think that Mutharika would be a candidate. That I know. Everybody in the country know about that people are going around that Mutharika is going to be a candidate. There some people who are campaigning against him, some people campaigning for him.
“I am not interested as to who will be there in 2014. We will see any crop of people coming in 2014.”
Gondwe maintained that he will quit politics when President Mutharika retires in 2014.
