MCP acted ‘ultra vires’ on suspension says Majoni
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) deputy secretary general Bester Majoni has bashed his party’s decision to suspend him saying the disciplinary committee had acted ‘ultra vires’ (beyond powers).
Majoni said he is challenging the suspension saying natural justice was denied in coming up with the decision.
“I cannot accept that kind of letter to me,” said Majoni who has been suspended on grounds that he is “arrogant” and “disrespectful to party leadership.”
“I have prepared a response to that [suspension] letter. I am saying no to that letter,” said Majoni who is in the taskforce for leadership change
Majoni said MCP is entitled to discipline their members but said the leadership has to do it “properly.”
The veteran politician accused party president John Tembo of resisting change of leadership pointing out that there was no National Executive Committee meeting.
“Tembo is a man who cannot reform,” said Majoni formerly a close aide of Tembo.
Majoni argued that the process for suspending him was flawed.
But spokesperson of MCP, Nancy Tembo said Majoni was suspended during a disciplinary meeting on October 20.
“He [Majoni) was called to a disciplinary hearing and following the recommendations from the disciplinary, the decision was made to suspend him,” said MCP spokeswoman.
She said the manner in which Majoni has been castigating MCP leadership has not been proper.
