Poor turnout at MCP’s Chakwera rally in Mangochi: Tembo attends
A poor crowd turned up for the political rally addressed by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Dr Lazarus Chakwera in eastern lakeshore district of Mangochi on Sunday notwithstanding the presence of one of front-runners in next year’s elections.
The rally was conducted barely 24 hours after Chakwera addressed a sizable crowd at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre on his maiden visit to the southern region since ascending to power as MCP president.
If the outcome for elections was based purely on rally attendances, Chakwera and MCP would have been thoroughly defeated in the south and eastern region.
The Mangochi rally was also attended by Chakwera’s predecessor, John Tembo.
In his address to the sparse crowd, Chakwera said if MCP is voted back into government he will encourage and support government policies that would benefit all Malawians regardless of region, tribe or religion.
He said MCP will encourage industrialisation and promoting commercial farming.
Chakwera also said MCP will empower institutions such as the Malawi House Corporation (MHC) to build houses for all Malawians regardless of their political affiliation.
He said MCP will encourage “equitable distribution” of opportunities to Malawians.
