PP accuses DPP of rigging Malawi elections: DPP says ‘senseless’’ accusation

Spokesperson of People’s Party of President Joyce Banda has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of rigging the election.

Unofficial results that are being announced by Zodiak Broadcasting Services indicate DPP leader Peter Mutharika is in the lead followed very closely by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has not declared the official results yet.

In a statement, PP spokesman said the party is reliably informed that the DPP are using data to divert and update figures via satellite as they go to MEC.

“Our professional law enforcers have surrounded the house in Lilongwe where this equipment is housed.  DPP is using another house in Nyambadwe, close to the house it used to be for Hon Gwanda Chakwamba for the same rigging tactics,” said Msonda in the statement.

According to the statement, a TNM server number is 0888815002 and destination is 0994354004.

“If you call these numbers someone will call you back shouting because you are disturbing the flow.

Call these numbers to disturb the flow,” the statement claimed.

Msonda said PP is appealing for “calm” as the party is following up the matter with keen interests.

He said the complaint has been lodged to MEC to “disqualify the DPP candidate.”

But DPP spokesman Nicholous Dausi described PP claims as “unfounded and senseless”,

“Malawians have spoken  the results which you are listening on Zodiak are a true reflection of what Malawians want and DPP is indeed heading back to power,” said Dausi.

Msonda nonetheless accused broadcasters for announcing the elections results of putting more emphasis results of the winning opposition candidates compared to the results of the winning PP candidate.

He raised the concern during the press briefing organized by Malawi Electoral Support Network at Royals hotel in Blantyre.

“I have observed the those radio stations that are announcing the results are putting more emphasis when it comes to the winning of the opposition candidate unlike where our candidate is winning,” said Msonda

Msonda also spoke against the releasing of results while people are voting saying it is like announcing the results of the marathon while athletes are still running.

However MESN officials declined to comment anything on the perceived bias of broadcasters saying they cannot on behalf of the broadcasters.

Chairperson for MESN Steve Duwa said there is no problem in announcing the results while people are voting because they are accompanied with a disclaimer that ‘these are unofficial results’ as MEC is yet to release the official results.

MEC appointed Zodiak Broadcasting Station and MBC TV as official broadcasters of the elections.
