PP councillor elected Mayor of Mzuzu: William Mkandawire, 29

Members of Parliament and Ward Councillor from northern region city of Mzuzu have elected  former ruling People’s Party (PP) councillor for Chengautuwa East Ward William Mkandawire as the new mayor for the city.

In the contests, Mkandawire aged 29 ,claimed 8 vites from 15 after defeating other contestant who included  Judith Chiumia and Samuel Gondwe.

Mkandawire graduated with BSc from Chancellor College in 2010. He teaches at Hard Target Secondary School in his Mchengautuwa Ward.

His deputy will be another PP councillor Fraser Chunga.

On Tuesday, in the capital Lilongwe ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councillor for Kawale 1 Ward Willie Chipondera was elected as the new mayor for the city.

Elections are underway in commercial capital Blantyre, in the southern region for a Mayor. Contesting are Getrude Chirambo and Noel Chalamanda (independents) and Alinane George Chipwete and Louis Ngalande from DPP.

Zomba and municipalities of Lunchenza and Kasungu are expected to elect mayors today.
