PP wants credit for Chinese loans

Former ruling People’s Party (PP) says credit should also go to ex-president Joyce Banda for facilitating some of the loans and grants which China granted Malawi this week.

PP officials told Nyasa Times Friday most of the loans and grants were signed two years ago.

“For example, the 300 megawatt coal fired electricity plant was signed by our secretary general, Ibrahim Matola when he was minister of Energy and mines two years ago,” said one official.

PP members have also taken up the issues in the social media, saying there is nothing that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) can celebrate as the loans and grants were negotiated by the PP led government when the DPP was in opposition

. The Kammwamba electricity power project is expected to reduce frequent power cuts which is affecting ordinary Malawians as well as investors, including Chinese investors.

The Chinese also want to upgrade Chileka Airport in Blantyre and construct a dual carriage road from Kanengo to Mchinji roundabout in Lilongwe to ease congestion, among top projects in the multibillion dollar loans and grants package.

There was no immediate response from the DPP or government on the PP assertions but some analysts say this shows there is continuation of development programs even if a party is booted out of power.

No one should get credit government is a continous entity panene zipani come and go

  6. Masoaopsya says:

If PP followers feel it is a continuity, why can’t they ask themselves the reasons behind their leadership discarding the projects the previous DPP had in place with Late Bingu Wa Mutharika at the helm, ie the Shire/Zambezi waterway, the university in Thyolo etc?

  7. Mgoloso says:

  8. John wa Chilungamo says:

I do not understand. If it was initiated and concluded what held the programmes for over three years. I doubt the reasoning of Nyasatimes publication crew and their research acumen. Before you publish, don’t you verify these things and go on to tell us what stopped the programmes. Some questions would be; Did Joyce Banda do something that Peter Mutharica cannot do that has led to the near implementation of the projects in question. I would beg Nyasatimes to give us well researched quality news

  10. Haxy says:

PP should also take credit for initiating cashgate at capital hill

  11. Mary Manda says:

Credit to PP my foot China -Malawi relationship was negotiated by the Mighty DPP President Bingu Mutharika when Joyce Banda was an office girl then……we also need to remember that the current President Peter Mutharika was Minister of foreign Affairs in the previous DPP government….lets learn to say the truth so that God can continue blessing us not lies….i rest my case

  12. Wozisata says:

Zonsenzo zopanda ntchito. At the end it will be the Malawians taxpayer that will be footing the loans.Dpp and Pp just want to make some cheap political score for nothing.Titazavutike ndife anthu wamba kulipira ngongole zimenezi while all the retired politicians will be basking in opulence after stealing so much from taxpayer.

  13. fitsoni says:

Ok then also PP should take credit for th K577 billion cashgate. Same same

  14. Mwako says:

Bwanji China sinapeleke ndalamazo nthawi ya PP = Cashgate

  15. Josophat Returns says:

PP govt was never clean during its short stint. I am surprised they are still in town. They should all have committed suicides after the revelations of cashgate. For them to garner more testosterone and talk about political correctness is utter bushit. Wasn’t it PP which failed to mention DPP and Bingu when opening Ekwendeni-ezondweni Road? Wasn’t it PP that failed to acknowledge DPP and Bingu during the opening of Kalonga-Chitipa Road? You didn’t walk the talk. So shut up! You are all worse. The only difference was that PP is a yaos outfit while the other one is a Lomwe to the core. They are all poor southern region politicians who have brought Malawi to its knees through selfishness, greed, nepotism, cronyism, tribalism and crookedry.

  16. John says:

But PP also took it up from DPP. PP did not initiate!!! It is Bingu who switched ties from RoC to Beijing and negotiated for the 1st phase of the projects. it was also agreed then that after the first phase, we would move into second phase. So whatever PP is said to have initiated, they were a continuation of DPP initiatives!

    Palibe nkhani apa.

  17. BigMan says:

Surely the PP is joking? First of all, the PP was never “in power”, they have never won an election and merely “acted” in that position when the DPP leader died in office. PP never had a national agenda, they just carried on most of DPP programs and Plans whilst stealing from the national coffers. To therefore say credit should go to Matola is just a joke that only a clown briefcase party like PP can come up with. What kind of party usurps power and immediately gets booted out at the first opportunity?!

  18. Thembakako says:

Is there anything wrong to continue with the project?? Check ur comments plz ,,,,,,,,, some of the comments can describe how ur mind thinks

  19. bakaya yohane mtsitsi says:

Bravo to every regime that took part, what we need is continueity.we R supposed all to build our nation

  20. drzeus says:

Continuation of development programs must never stop bcoz these r medium to long term projects which “government” initiates and paid by the taxpayers. This nonsense about PP or DPP or Joyce Banda or Peter Mutharika taking credit as if they will pay from their pockets must STOP.

  26. Corolla says:

PP is very right, let the Mutharika govt know that Malawians are aware that it’s just a continuity from where anasiila

  27. chokachoka says:

You people are dunderheads. The Kamwamba project plus all the other projects that have just materialized were initiated by Bingu’s DPP. Joyce Banda and her PP found the plans and proposals when Bingu died. This is the reason the signing ceremony for the Kamwamba project was done in June 2012 just a month after Bingu died. There is no way the PP government could have initiated the Kamwamba project a month after Bingu died and when considering that half that month Joyce had inherited the Bingu cabinet. There is literally nothing that the PP government initiated. They only continued with Bingu projects like they did with other projects. Mwauponda

  28. Mbwiye says:

  29. KARU UNITED says:

At first you told us that the panacea for the power black outs would be the Malawi – Mozambique interconnectivity project, bankrolled by the Millennium Challenge Account, now you are heralding Kam’mwamba coal plant, which is which?

  30. nyavundo says:

kanengo mchinji road is overdue and it was planned by late Bingu.About loans PP should shut out you are the failled paty you have nothing to show up.DPP has the power to cancelle your agreement but they have done so because they have peoples at heart so just sleep.

  32. Achimidzimidzi says:

Looking for recognition basi. PP and DPP have similarities and It is difficult for me to differentiate them except by the colors and symbols:

Here are some similarities PP and DPP share:
    1. Formed under bizarre circumstances. illegal parties.
    2. they all once ruled by default
    3. The presidents of these parties have had unjustified prolong stays outside the country
    4. They all have projects about village houses
    5. Both of them are cashgaters. MK24b and Mk577b respectively.

  33. chefourpence says:

Why not credit for the cashgate mess? Stupid!

  34. Kakha uErutu says:

Malawians, Malawians, Malawians! Why do you waste your energy on trivia? Don’t you see that it is petty debating on whose initiative these projects are?

Malawians, what you should know is that these projects will bring opportunities for wealth creation and economic growth resulting into well being of everyone.

I thought you would be wise to engage yourselves in exploring what investment ventures you would launch, what strategic partnerships you would forge, what linkages would be strategic.

Let me warn you Malawians, don’t loathe us when we come with our investments and let you work for us.

WAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP MALAWIANS! AND STOP THIS NONSENSE ARGUING ON TRIVIA.

  35. maganizo wa maganizo says:

Who told you that the loans were initiated by PP government. What we know as malawians PP Government initiated for cashgate that is all.To initiate and negotiate for loans it needs somebody with guts up in the head not the type of joice Banda, the crooked lady.If she initiated the grants are you trying to tell us that she failed and apm convinced them.Sometimes we should give credit to APm because he deserves it after somebody somewhere has failed.

  36. levelheaded says:

There will always be one government at a time.

  37. It’s government not parties, neither DPP not PP but head of state who signed, ignorance on the side of PP people. There are some loans that the government is still paying but it was taken during UDF regime. Can someone point a finger at UDF no it was government’s move then.

  44. Knysna Zoona says:

Lets learn to give credit where its due,the initiatives to secure were done by the former president jb for the benefit of malawians not herself, dpp dont try to get for what you didnt initiate, give credit where its due!!!!!!

  45. PP isaiwale kuti CHINA inabwera ndi DPP,pamene PP inalowa m’boma inabwelelanso ndi taiwan ndipo china projects stoped. Eg 6 univesities project stoped, mpaka yothaitha MUST funding/grants stoped ma class ena anawasandutsa ma lab kuti itsekulidwe ndi PP…Gov Files.PP had little time to start their own projects let alone with CHINA. PP wanted to name BINGU STADIUM after their leader JB & coz of that project got stuck. but evidence support negotiation of the same started with DPP.My Loard I Find PP Not Honest to thir court, Evidence Of Trying To Hijacking DPP Projects Is Undenyable And To Say PP Relationship With CHINA Got Improved Its Unpalatable Lie Sitikanatsekulira MUST yopanda ma lab & Relating To UND Party Vs GOV In Cameroon case,There4 The Accused Is Guity, PP(accused) Should Hav Said That 4 Political Gain And In Doing So PP Has Blocken Law On Misinforming The Nation Or Any Party Involved According To Paliament Act, Cord 3 Section 82 Of Our Constition. 46. Titus scot says:

Zopusa izi, what credit? Tidzakhala osauka mpaka mpaka. We are sick in our heads. Go to America, China, Uk or any other country they have no time to be thinking of who initiated what development because it is the duty of every government to carry out development in the country. More over the projects mentioned will be carried out with loans and not just grants tizabweza tonse regardless of party affiliation. Siuja a PP ankanyadira stadium, vale project, za coal powered electricity plant, the Kanengo pass highway zoti anayambitsa
ndi Bingu wa Mutharika (MHSRIP). Bola DDP has something to show off nanga PP chomwe anapanga ndi chiani? Kapichira II was Bingu’s baby a PP anakangotsegulira, ha ha ha!

  47. rosick says:

Accepting this chinese loan can not be an indicator of continueation of development projects as such. They were simply myopic and thought they will scoop some political votes. Besides, money is “mouth-watering” to many a politician of today. They are busy working out how to perforate that cash bag-yawo ija.

  48. Bwako says:

Credit pp inatenga kale ku ndege.ndipo ubwele uzakwizingidwe iwe apo bi come 2019 tizizakugenda miyala pamisonkhano yako.watizunza inde takhauladi.

  49. zatha says:

Lets cry over real things! Ife ma tax payers tili pheeeee! Pali nkhani apa? The parties should cry for recognition only if they use their party funding to pay back such loans on behalf of tax payers osati izi. Todalulembani ntchito kaya, kapena simukudziwa kapena? Kambani ina!!!!

  50. joshua vs bonke vs sheperd vs angel vs salanje vs...... says:

  51. anadimba says:

nanu aPP!please learn to give credit wher it is due. Timakuyamikirani lero ayamikireni anzanu. Samakunamizirani eti?kuti mukudzungulira dzikoli kuuza azungu kuti asathandize dziko lino?nda khulupirira.eeeeee muzitchuka nokha eeeeeeee!

  52. Deputy says:

But why was Muthalika talking as if he initiated it?

  53. Sapitwa says:

PP is no longer the ruling party. They are long gone in oblivion.Who ever signed was working and received salaries for it. They can not therefore claim any credit. If DPP wanted to stop these loans, they could do so even though someone signed for them.
So the message to every Malawian is that DPP has brought all these loans and if the projects are completed during DPP’s reign, they will claim the credit for being the doer. Only the doer is remembered and not the one who signs!

  54. Malawi says:

PP is right. The loans were already negotiated by Joyce Banda. The good thing is that evidence is there. So DPP will lose credibility if they dispute.

  55. baby says:

So it means there is continuity. Bravo to PP for iniatiating the grants and a big bravo to DPP for the continuity.
