PPM to hold convention in July: Malawi road to 2014

Malawi opposition Peoples Progressive Movement (PPM) has disclosed that the party’s convention will be held in July this year in readiness for the tripartite polls next year.

PPM Secretary General Wellington Chatepa said election of their presidential candidate ahead of the polls is topping the agenda at the meeting.

“PPM convention will be held in July in Blantyre,” Chatepa said.

He said there will contest for PPM president, a position which is currently held by Mark Katsonga, a wealthy businessman.

Chatepa said apart from choosing a presidential candidate they intend to make their forthcoming convention unique by among issues reviewing some of their policies.

Apart from voting for a presidential candidate, other positions to be contested for will include that of the vice president, the second vice president, the Secretary General and the vice secretary General.

While some of the country’s parties have made and are making strides to hold such conventions, some sections of society have described them as undemocratic as some positions are believed not to be fairly contested for.
