Presidential Initiative on Safe Motherhood becomes Mutharika family affair
Presidential Iniiative on Safe Motherhood has now become President Peter Mutharika’s family affair as the head of state has appointed his home chief, Ngolongoliwa as board chair.
The coordinator for the presidential iniatiative is Mutharika’s sister in law, Callista Mutharika.
The chief director of the presidential initiative is a distant relation of the president, Chimwemwe Chipungu, who is also personal close friend of Ben Phiri, former trusted and long serving personal assistant of Mutharika.
Chipungu said at the headquarters of senior chief Ngolongoliwa that the chief has worked tirelessly on health issues, this is why he has been appointed to that position.
“It is not by chance that he has been appointed to this position, the senior chief has shown great interest in health issues,” said Chipungu.
During the Joyce Banda era, chief Kwataine was chairman of chiefs on the initiative.
Ngolongoliwa also sits on several boards of parastatals and is Malawi’s favoured chief wielding a lot of power for his close relationship to the President.
He is also head of the Chiefs Forum.
