PS Makileni, driver fight at Local government ministry

Principal Secretary at Malawi’s Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Christopher Makileni was engaged in a fierce fight with one of the drivers following disagreements over the use of a project vehicle.

Business came to almost a standstill Monday morning as people were readying themselves to start the day’s work following the fight that had to take fellow workers to separate the two.

Police have since arrested the driver who has been identified as Wilson Kamanga.

Police deputy spokesperson Kevin Maigwa confirmed with Malawi’s leading daily The Nation and said Kamanga has since been charged with common assault, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and misuse of a public motor vehicle.

Maigwa indicated that Kamanga is also likely to face more charges as at the time of the interview police were still recording a statement from him.

Makileni, who is Principle Secretary Two, also confirmed the incident.

The Ministry’s spokesperson Maganizo Mazeze in an interview just said that there was a “minor misunderstanding between the driver and the PS which administration is addressing.”

“That is all I can say,” he said.

Witnesses said that the incident was triggered after the driver without authority withdrew the ministry’s vehicle from Zomba where it was on a project and also instead of taking it to Lilongwe he drove straight to Mzuzu.

“However, when the PS heard about this and that the vehicle was in Mzuzu he reported the matter to Police,” said one of the witnesses.

Apparently, after hearing that Police were hunting him Kamanga was angered and decided to confront his boss.
