Pupil defiled by teacher, pregnant at 14

Malawi Police in Neno district have arrested a primary school teacher who allegedly impregnated his in-law.

Paul Steven 26 years-old has been arrested after the victim’s grandfather reported the matter to police.

Steven, a teacher at Nsenjere Primary School, allegedly impregnated his 14-year-old in-law who is in standard 6 at the same school, according to national police publicist Rhoda Manjolo.

”The victim is a sister to the wife of the suspect, and has been staying with them,” Manjolo explained.

She added: ”The victim fell in love with the suspect. He was sleeping with her, and eventually made her pregnant.”

The victim, however, Manjolo said had been hiding the affair until when was confronted by her grandfather who became suspicious.

Medical examination revealed the girl – whose identity we cannot reveal for legal reasons – is four months pregnant.

Steven who hails from Jamali village T/A Lundu in Blantyre has been charged with Defilement under Section 138 (1) of the Penal  Code.

In a related development, in Nsanje a 16-year-old girl is pregnant after she was defiled, allegedly by her teacher.

“He would come to the house I shared with my younger sister. He promised that he would help me skip Standard Seven if I passed Standard Six examinations. I accepted the offer although I knew he was married,” said the girl.

The teacher allegedly denied responsibility after the matter was reported to police.

Executive director of Girls Empowerment Network (Genet) Faith Phiri said defilement defeats efforts to keep girls in school and away from child marriages.

“We strongly condemn the violence that girls are facing in schools and at home. The role of teachers is to protect them and not abuse,” said Phiri.

The teacher is still a boy (26 years). The parents of the girl are to blame. How can you send your daughter who is old to her brother in-law? Parents please take care of your children. Don’t transfer your responsibility to other people.
