While confirming the development in an email response to Nyasa Times, Radio Maria Director Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Kimu said the total cost of the whole project costs about K70 Million.

The station which currently reaches out to almost 80% of the Malawi population and part of Mozambique and Zambia has since embarked on a fundraising campaign to raise funds to purchase three extra towers to be planted in three sites.

The station currently has 10 transmitters in the areas of St John- Mangochi, Ching’ombe-Monkeybay, Namwera, Zomba, Mpingwe-Blantyre, Dedza, Dowa, Lilongwe, Chikangawa and Karonga.

Fr. Kimu revealed that the expansion process has already received a boost of equipment valued at about K200 Million donated by the World Family of Radio Maria in Italy.

He said the equipment will be installed in four new sites namely Mzuzu, Karonga, Dwangwa and Thyolo while in Karonga it will just be an upgrade.

So far, the Catholic owned radio station has also already raised K4,600, 000.00 through a dinner and dance organized by a group of 17 young men from the Archdiocese of Blantyre recently.

The group is yet to raise the balance of MK1.341.500.00 to complete the payment of one tower.

“Since one tower has almost been paid for, we are looking for MK 18 Million to complete payment for three towers for the remaining site” said Fr. Kimu.

Meanwhile, the Radio Maria Director has called upon well wishers to contribute towards the project.

If all the three Million Catholics were to contribute Mk 1,000.00 each this project would not be a problem at all; ngakhale Mk 500, ndi ndalama zambiri to put up this project and sustain the running of the radio for quite a reasonable time. We do allot of contributions in our Parishes, this could be done!

The story of Radio Maria is such a beautiful story. It is the flagship radio in terms of religious radios in Malawi (not just Catholic radios)……. all because of the hard work of Dr Kimu and his team. BUT, do we need 4 catholic radio stations in Malawi (in Mangochi, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga)? Do we call that a United Catholic Church? We read that in RSA, the Catholic Church which has over 50 dioceses has only 1 radio station – what’s wrong with us? If it is a question of languages, I am sure Radio Maria can accommodate all… Read more »
