Red Lions outclass Civo: Malawi TNM Super League

Red Lions put up a sterling performance to beat visiting Civo United 2-0 in an energy-sapping TNM Super League encounter which was played at Zomba Community Centre ground on Sunday.

The win was the second for the soldiers coming after another 2-1 victory over fellow soldiers Airborne Rangers from Salima the previous day.

They are now on third position with 22 points from 12 games played so far.

It was a sparking game as the Civil Servants were looking to garner maximum points following a disappointing draw to Blantyre United the previous day in Nchalo.

However, they found the Lions den unwelcoming as the soldiers pressed hard for an early goal.
Their efforts paid off in the 37th minute when Kelvin Katema unleashed a 40-metre grounder which caught Duncan Mkandawire in goals for Civo unawares for the first goal. Thereafter it was a balanced affair as the game went end to end with no additional goals.

The coming in of Thomas Makombwa for Katema resulted in the soldiers getting the second goal. A corner-kick from the right was flicked into the net by Makombwa barely four minutes into the pitch.

The goal dampened Civo’s hopes of coming back into the game as they kept chasing shadows in the dying minutes. Chants of Kumutima Zii by Red Lions fans went on after the final whistle as they escorted the players to their team bus.

Civo United coach Oscar Kaunda accepted defeat and promised to work on the weaknesses noted in weekend assignments.

His counterpart Billie Phambala hailed his charges for regaining the rhythm and winning games.
