Reserve Bank of Malawi investigates staff over Chaponda’s cash-stash video clip

Reserve Bank of Malawi has instituted an in house investigation to find out the person behind a video clip in social media showing Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials handing over K166 million seized from former Agriculture minister George Chaponda to bank officials.

Authorities counting millions of cash found at Chaponda’s house. The cash was being deposited at  Reserve Bank of Malawi

ACB officials cried foul that the video clip exposed its investigators who usually do their job in camera.

The Reserve Bank also says this was a breach of banking ethics because customers should not be captured on camera when depositing money.

Reports indicate that Fred Kalonga, a statistical assistant at Imports Monitoring at the bank was behind the video clip and is likely to be suspended or lose his job.

Chaponda was fired on Tuesday following reports that he was involved in suspicious dealings in the procurement of maize from Zambia.

The ACB investigators stumbled upon the stashes of the money following their investigation on the matter.
