Rivals Ngwira, Chalira battle for Malawi women football committee hot seat

Outgoing National Women Football Committee (NWFC) chairperson Suzgo Ngwira and her deputy Severia Chalira are expected to battle for the committee’s hot seat when the women soccer body goes to the polls on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre.

Ngwira and Chalira have not been seeing each other eye to eye since they rose to the helm of the body four years ago.

The two were also in different camps when Football Association of Malawi (Fam) went to the polls last year with the Blantyre based Ngwira supporting the Henry Chibowa camp while Chalira from Mzuzu affiliated to the Walter Nyamilandu grouping that swept the votes.

According to information gathered from the Fam secretariat, the two will now come face to face during the polls which will also see Catherine Mkuntha and Anne Mseteka fighting for the vice chairmanship.

Caroline Phiri from Lilongwe is expected to go in unopposed on the post of general secretary with Winnie Kayuni and Mkuntha battling for the treasurer’s post.

It is not known if Mkuntha will be asked to chose one post between vice chair and treasurer.
