Robbers attack Muluzi residence, two watchmen arrested

As insecurity problem rages on in Malawi, a group of armed robbers in the capital Lilongwe beat the security detail and entered at a residence of Malawi’s Minister of Energy Mines and Natural Resources, Atupele Muluzi Friday night and went away with cash and some assorted item.

Muluzi: Robbers hit his digs

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula says the robbers entered the house which is situated in Area 9 through a hole they made on the wall of the house.

According to Dandaula, Muluzi was left unhurt when the robbers found him inside his bedroom when they were searching for variables.

“So far only K30, 000 which was in bundles of K10, 000 and K20, 000 and three phones have been discovered stolen from inside the house,” he says.

He says the police have so far arrested two personal security guards for Muluzi for questioning.

Dandaula said the guards told the police that their hands were tied before the robbers started making a hole into the house wall.

“The way robbers operated, shows that they had full knowledge of the house,” says Dandaula, he not could tell the type of weapons the robbers used during their operation.

He said police has now intensified security patrols around the area to avoid similar occurrence.

Recently, robbers who included security detail, were caught at the residence of vice president Saulos Chilima.

Intensify patrols – for how many days and why only area 9 . This area has a very good security company for its residence that patrol day & night.
You will find traffic police near DSTV office and Petroda Mchinji road busy till 11 in the night. collecting spot fines. But you never find any police from L & O or the Crime branch.

Drive on the road from chipuku round about towards riverside hotel and you find hard working traffic policeman till midnight. Traffic police use ambulances to designated places in Lilongwe, Blantyre etc to ferry the speed cameras, instead of using the ambulances for emergency- pathetic

I applaud thieves that went to Atupele’s house. They were recovering tax which his father Bakili Muluzi stole from very poor Malawians including parents of & thieves themselves. Why was he asleep when the country has huge problems including the impending fuel crisis. Bravo thieves & strongly suggest you visit all cashgaters since 2005 & not poor Makawians. I thought ministerial houses are guarded by armed police? So they were overpowered and tied? and they start digging a hole without any noise to be heard…? ok

  39. Redeemed says:

House robbery is a global serious concern, Malawi was worse hit by house breakings especially, during the era of UDF leadership. Many victims lost their belongs while others lost lives, by that time here in RSA we seldom heard of any house breakings, to date, things have turned around, RSA has the highest statistics of house breakings.
The latest syndicate operates as follows, when these robbers have identified the house to hit, they elect a FOR SALE signage at that particular’s house during the day when the owners are away, they remove it just before they return. They do this for a number of weeks, ntil they ascetain than every one around that house is conviced that the property is going on sale.
Then one of the days when noone least expect, they would come with a truck and empty the house and neighbours will not even bother to raise their eye brows as they are rest assured that the property has been on the market for a while.

Another major worrying facteor are the people who promote these robberies by purchasing stolen goods, I wish the hand of law could be hardened enough against these inconsiderate scavengers, imagine if none of us could refrain from occupying stolen goods I am adamant that these hard core criminals will be detered from this senseless criminal act. Remember no one is immune from robbry, therefore before you consider to pay for a stolen good, put yourself in the shoes of the victim.

    Its not DPP

    Its not UDF
    Its not AFORD
    Its not UP
Its not all those briefcase parties
    But…………
    Who is it then
    The usual disgruntled
The one who caused havoc at the onset of Multiparty democracy
The one that used to uproot electricity poles along streets especially from KIA to LL City
The one whose hands are still tainted with blood
The one who is still claiming the presidency of this country
The one who is still living in past dreams
    This is non other than……
I mean the one who says ‘Kwacha!!!!’ even when the sun is setting…hahahahaha!
Have I mentioned a name here??? No.. and a big nooooooooo.!

Malawi will remain unsecure unless the welfare of police officers is improved….just imagine, earning K35,000 a month, can you deliver? Junior police officers are lowerly paid but they are the ones who are always on the ground while senior officers they get huge salary, live in unrented houses and they are not mostly on ground….
    Salary=K35000(constable)
House rent(unconditional house) nyumba yomvesa chisoni)=K15000
    Water & electricity bills=K15000
Do you think this officer can perform professionally???? Thats why a police akumakhuzidwa ndi nkhani zakuba, corruption and the like…sikumakhala kufuna koma kusowa pogwira coz banja, achibale onse amakhala kuti akudalira iwe.
I hope this government will change the welfare of police for it to achieve CHITETEZO, CHILUNGAMO, CHITUKUKO.

  53. msadane says:

If the Lilongwe Police spokesperson thinks ” intensfying security patrols in the area to avoid similar occurrences” is the solution, then the police will be responding in a narrow minded way. Insecurity is getting rampant all over. The targeting must go beyond around the Atupele residence area to be effective

Thieves are a menace in Malawi, people are losing valuable items but when they steal from a minister it is a big story. This is bullshit!!!!!!!!! I lost valuable items and the court discharged a thieve who was caught by my security guard. What is special about this minister? I am an internationally well known expert, 1000 times better than this son of a thief. Deal with the problem of thieves without favouring a minister. The issue worshipping ministers should stop.
