Robbers murder business magnate in Blantyre

A renowned business personality, Serafim Fernando Da Silva, was shot dead Saturday in Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre, Police have confirmed.

Da Silva, 69, a Portuguese national, was shot at the entrance of his office in Manja upon arrival from the bank where he had withdrawn about K2 million to pay for his workers’ wages.

About five armed men driving a Toyota Corolla BS 9292 reportedly shot the deceased in the presence of his wife and son and went away with K2 million.

The assailants are suspected to have trailed the deceased from the bank.

“Some well-wishers rushed him to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, but it was too late to save his life,” Elizabeth Divala, Blantyre Police Spokesperson said.

Da Silva was a heavyweight building contractor as well as an employee of Terrastone Construction Company.
