Chief, 3 others arrested for murder of ‘witchcraft’ practicing couple

A village headman in the northern region district of Mzimba plus three others have been arrested for the murder of an aged couple which they suspected of practicing witchcraft and being behind the death of one of their relatives.

Nyasa Times has confirmed the arrest of village headman Chiwelam’buwu real name Edson Ng’oma (42), Stocker Ng’oma (68), McHellings Ng’oma (44) and Gibson Ng’oma – all from Traditional Authority Jalavikuba in Mzimba district.

According to police, a fracas erupted at the funeral of one of their relatives who died after a short illness at Chiwelam’buwu village in Mzimba district on Friday, and relatives accused the deceased of having a hand in the death.

As the elders were handling the issue the chief led a group of youth which started stoning the deceased house and later torched it killing two in the process, Police spokesperson Victor Khamisi told Nyasa Times.arrest

He identified the deceased Tenson Ng’oma aged 80 from Chilelam’buwu village, T.A. Jalavikuwa in Mzimba and Tafwakose Qongwani aged 78 from the same village.

The four have been charged with murder contrary to section 209 of the penal code which attracts a maximum sentence of death if found guilty.

The suspects will appear before court soon according to Khamisi.

Chiwela’mbuwu village, much as is in the civil district of Mzimba, has most of her population accessing several public services from Rumphi district.
