Rumphi Pirates stun Karonga United to make Pres Cup round of 16

The game started on a high note, especially on the side of the lower league team as they pressurised the super league side Karonga United who were poor in defence and the central fields.

Rumphi Pirates quickly notched in three goals within 20 minutes of the first half through a double by Kondwani Payi and Innocent Jere. This piled pressure on the crocodiles of Karonga as the first half ended 3-0 for the Pirates.

In the second half, bad omen continued haunting Karonga United who conceded another goal in the 51st minute when Kondwani Mhone scored the fourth goal from a poor defence command by Karonga skippers, making it 4-0.

After the fourth goal, which was viewed as scored from an offside position by Karonga officials who insulted the referees for that, their coach, Kondwani Mwalweni was sent to the stands for misbehaving.

As the game continued the Crocodiles of Karonga put more pressure on the Pirates leading to a 78th minute consolation goal by Maneno Nyoni. The 4-1 win result for the Pirates makes them proceed to the national round of 16 draw.

After the game, Karonga United coach, Mwalweni, accepted the defeat and quickly quashed suggestions that the result will affect their upcoming Super League game which is scheduled on Sunday against Silver Strikers.

“We have lost the game and we are out of the cup, what is needed now is to focus on our next fixture which is Sunday,” he said.

In his remarks, Rumphi Pirates team manager, Luka Tembo, praised his boys for the performance they displayed and promised his team’s supporters good preparation for anything coming their way at national level.

“It was a good game because our preparations were fine and our hard work has paid today. Now what we want is to send a strong massage that we are not just a small team in Rumphi, but we have a dream to end on high note in this competition,” said Tembo.

Karonga United becomes the third TNM Super League to exit the Presidential Cup after Mzuni FC and Kamuzu Barracks FC who were knocked out of the competition at regional levels.
