Sakala floors Nanthuru to win Malawi Boxing Association presidency

Former Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) vice president Henry Sakala Saturday rose to the helm of the boxing body after defeating former general secretary Arthur Nanthulu during an annual general meeting held at Sun Village Hotel in Liwonde.

The Lilongwe based Sakala, who has served as a boxing official for over a decade defeated his rival with 15 votes against 6.

Before the elections, the two were involved in a cold war with Sakala accusing Sports Council of campaigning for the Blantyre based lawyer.

Sakala’s camp went further asking Sports Council board to preside over the elections instead of the secretariat.

The Council secretariat reacted by completely pulling out its involvement but backtracked at the eleventh hour to preside over the polls.

In the vice presidency race, Captain Eric Masenda from Lilongwe defeated Mzuzu based Steven Moyo with Mbachichi Nyerenda from Blantyre seeing off challenges from Maxwell Tsitsi and Taonga Tembo in the race
for the general secretary position.

Elson Mwankhomwa from Blantyre went in unopposed as vice general secretary.

Former treasurer Sekani Mkandawire lost his position to Abdul Nkata, who was an executive member in the outgoing committee.

Positions of executive member went to Pyson Likagwa, Salome Manyau, Shadreck Namalomba and Harry Tilingamawa.

Veteran Bester Saopa failed to make it as an executive member.
