Salima stadium needs K200 million: To be completed by 2020

The dream of turning Salima Community Centre ground into mini-stadium needs about K 200 million, it has been revealed.

Salima Director of Public Works Sydney Chiphaka said the completion of the fence is not the end of the project.

“We have finished the first phase which has cost us about K47 million and the next phase is to construct a VIP stand, dressing room and toilets which will take us through another year or two.

“To finish the two phases we need to raise up to K200 million,” said Chiphaka after inspecting the completed construction of the brick fence,.

He added, “The main challenge we have is that the council cannot generate enough funds for the stadium within a year alone and we need to get funds from other development projects to accomplish this project.”

On the impact of the stadium Chiphaka said the stadium will help generate funds for the development of the district from gate collections of matches played in Salima.

However, Felix Jumbe, Salima Central parliamentarian said the work progress of the community ground has been impressive and said it will not only benefit people from Salima Central, but the whole Salima and other districts.

“What we have been looking for is to have a stadium, but in the interim we thought we should have a community ground that is well fenced, that will be able to generate money and will be a source of funding to the council,” he said.

Jumbe admitted that the funds were not enough and they had to fundraise other than using Local Development Fund.

The stadium which was started last year will be fully completed by 2020 and the district council Chairperson Peter Kadam’manja asked the committee overseeing the project to stick to its time frame.
