SEED withdraws from Malawi schools sports activities over Sawerengera suspension
The South East Education Division (SEED) has withdrawn its divisional support from Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) activities following the suspension of its chairperson James Sawerengera.
MASSA disciplinary committee last year resolved to suspend Sawerengera from participating in its activities at all levels for alleged conduct that brought disrepute to the committee.
The suspension letter sourced by Nyasa Times and signed by MASSA disciplinary chairperson Severia Chalira, the committee claimed a number of reasons leading to the suspension of the Seed chairperson.
Sawelengera was found guilty for acting in a manner that has brought grave and serious disrepute to the committee.
MASSA , according to the letter, Sawelengera was “ putting the committee, Ministry of Education and sponsors into disrepute because of your unbecoming behavior.”
The letter alleges that during Airtel launch last year, Sawerengera instigated other divisional chairpersons to have a meeting with the sponsors without the knowledge of the MASSA executive committee, brought confusion amongst MASSA members by providing false information and influencing his school to use players from other schools during the competition.
But SEED, in response to the suspension of its chairperson, in a letter dated January 8 2013 said the decision has negatively affected sports in the division.
“The MASSA division committee has become dormant and is in the process seriously retarding preparations for 2013 MASSA activities,” reads the letter in part.
It adds: “You may wish to know that the committee is lacking leadership and up to now, it has not submitted its financial report for 2012 Coca-Cola Schools football tournament. …..It also remains the concern of the division that the way Mr Sawerengera’s issue is being handled leaves a lot to be desired and shows that there is serious hidden agenda that your committee would like to achieve.
“The division does not want to work with a committee that is disorganized and therefore withdraws its support with immediate effect until the matter of the committee’s leadership is resolved.”
Meanwhile, activities for MASSA in the South East Education Division are at a standstill due to the issue.
