Shanil says PP can’t block her independent candidature

Former Malawi first lady Shanil Muluzi has challenged that no ruling People’s Party (PP) official can block her from contesting for the parliamentary seat in Balaka West Constituency as everyone has democratic rights and freedom to exercise such rights freely.

Shanil, who is a member of PP, explained that  she will back PP presidential candidate, Joyce Banda, the country’s current Head of State.

“People including chiefs asked to contest as an independent candidate. At first I was refusing but now I have bowed to their demands.

“I will contest as an independent candidate but I will still campaign for our president Joyce Banda,” she said in an interview with a local daily.

She further observed that during primary elections party supporters’ favorites are usually blocked or made to lose but when the same candidates contests as independent candidates wins the elections.

“I challenge that even if they announce in the villages that people should not come to my meetings, they will still come because its them who asked me to contest,” asserted Shanil.
