Silver appoints caretaker coaches: Songo, Chirwa

In a bid to find a winning formula, Malawi’s TNM Super League defending champions Silver Strikers have appointed their legendary midfielder Francis Songo and  former defender Stain Chirwa as interim coaches following the suspension of their technical Panel.

Nyasa Times reported on Monday about the firing of Head Coach Franco Ndawa and his backroom staff.

While confirming the development, club Chairman Macdonald Mafuta Mwale said they suspended Ndawa, his two assistants Hellings Mwakasungula and Itaye Nundwe, as well as team manager Subusiso Padambo pending further investigations on technical and disciplinary issues.

After ‘firing’ the entire coaching panel following a string of losses, Silver Strikers have also suspended three players, among them captain Davie Moya, due to indiscipline.

The others are striker Rodrick Gonani and goalkeeper Amadu Ali.

The players are reported have been sported at some drinking joints on the eve of their game against Blue Eagles which ended 0-1 in favor of the latter.

Both the players and technical panel have been suspended for two weeks, according to Mwale.

Mwale confessed that they club approached Young Chimodzi to take charge of the team, but have tentatively hit the snug considering that the former Flames and Escom United coach is also on contract with the ministry of sports as Central Region Football Development Officer.

He also stressed that club will not chop off and dump the suspended coaches, saying there are still in their plans and that Mwakasungula and Itaye will be sent to a fully paid for coaching course soon.

But from the look of things, Chimodzi’s contract with the government bars him from being engaged by another party on permanent basis.
