Silver beat Nomads in ‘pointless’ league opener

Silver Strikers kicked off their title defence with a win against  Mighty Wanderers  2-0 in the official launch of the 2014 TNM Super League season at a packed Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Striker Rodrick Gonani scored twice to hand champions Silver the pointless  victory  as both teams are being docked points for perpetrating violence last season. Silver will forfeit nine points whereas Wanderers will be deduced six points.

Despite seeing two of their realible defenders Thoko Stambuli and captainLucky Malata taken off the field of play on a stretcher after sustaining injuries, the Nomads striking force could not even secure a goal.

The combination of Innocent Dzimbiri and Victor Mpinganjira as the main strikers proved a total failure for the Nomads as they were chasing their own shadows.

The Nomads were also blunt on midfield, where totally missed the services of Cuthebert Sinetre.who was not even on the bench.

However, the Bankers tormented the Nomads especially through Ndaziona Chatsalira and Green Harawa, who also created goals for Gonani.

The Nomads on the other side should salute their goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa who saved them from further embarrassment.

Silver, chasing a fourth consecutive league title, had Gonani on the score sheet when he connected Blessings Tembo’s free-kick on the 50th minute before adding the second with a cheeky back-heel in the box after the ball was played onto his path by Frazer Menyele.

Silver coach Stain Chirwa said the result was very important, saying forfeting points will “serve as a lesson to our supporters that violence has no good contribution to football.”

In other Saturday results, Civo lost 1-2 to Azam Tigers as Mafco thumped rookies Chikwawa United 3-0.
