Silver, Bullets tie nets K5.3m; Malawi Presidential Cup

Despite the record crowd that turned up for Sunday’s Presidential Cup round-of-16 match involving Silver Strikers and Big Bullets, only 5.3 million was realized from the gates.

The amount does not tally with the mammoth crowd that came to watch the match at Civo Stadium. Sunday’s attendance even surpasses the crowd that turned up for the Flames versus Ghana Orange Africa Cup of Nations qualifier last year.

The loss of revenue has been largely been attributed to poor planning on the part of Football Association of Malawi (Fam), which only hired 40 security police officers and allowed spectators to pay a meager K300 for the open stands.

As a result of the poor planning, scores of fans went in for free and some facilities at the stadium were damaged.

While most of the non-paying fans jumped in through the brick fence, the majority went in through one of the entry gates after razing down a wire fence and pulling down part of a brick fence.

Authorities at Civo are yet to do an assessment of the damage caused.
