Slow start for nomination presentation in Blantyre District

Presentation of nomination papers by aspiring parliamentarians and councillors in the May 20 Tripartite Elections started on a low note in Blantyre on Monday as the district commissioner’s office received seven nominations only.

Statistics for the opening day, which Malawi News Agency (Mana) accessed, indicated that an independent candidate, two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and one People’s Party (PP) aspiring councillors and three independent parliamentary aspirants presented their candidature papers and were given certificates.

Blantyre district commissioner Atanazio Chibwana said the numbers would pick up as the week progresses.

“I look forward to receiving more nominations in the course of the week as there is still more time before the presentation period closes,” he said.

Chibwana, however, appealed to aspirants not to wait until the last minute as this may cause panic among candidates.

Among those that presented their papers included independent parliamentary candidates Timothy Mphinda, Wells Gama and Gerald Tasaukadala while James Zulu (Independent), Felix Maliki PP, Rabson Mapanga and Steve Kamwendo of the DPP.
