According to Kamuzu International Airport’s Police Public Relations Officer Sgt. Sapulani Chitonde, the man identified as Siyabonga Kom flew in from Sao Paulo airport in Brazil but connected to Malawi using an Ethiopian Airline in Addis Ababa.

Sapulani said the suspect was stopped by police at KIA arrival hall as he was suspected to have carried strange things and upon searching his bag, Police discovered cocaine weighing 4.2 kilograms.

The suspect is currently in custody at KIA police and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of illegal and dangerous drugs contrary to Section 11 (A) as stipulated in Regulation 19 of the Dangerous Drug Act.

Meanwhile, Chitonde has warned and vowed to arrest everyone attempting to import or export dangerous drugs using KIA.

“Time for foul play is over and never think of using this place; we are professionals and alert” he said.
