Flames in Ouagadougou ‘confident’ to book Angola ticket
Malawi national football team, the Flames are in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso confident to book their place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola during their November 14 match with the host.
Malawi needs a win or a draw to qualify for CAN 2010 in Angola.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM)’s president, Walter Nyamilandu, said the association would raise incentives in the form of allowances for the players involved in game against Burkina Faso.
“We would like to motivate the players so that when they are on the ground they should play the match as a business venture and at the same time as a competition where they would earn something,” he said.
Nyamilandu said the players’ allowances would be raised to MK100,000 (US$705) from the current MK30,000 (US$210) after a win and to MK50,000 (US$353) for a draw.
This was excluding other allowances and pledges made to the team by other well-wishers, he added.
Flames coach, Kinnah Phiri, admitted the game against Burkina Faso will be “vital” but said the players were focused.
“It’s going to be an important match for us and we need very important result,” said Kinnah.
In the Group E match, Malawi will be hoping that Guinea loses to Ivory Coast so that their slot for Angola is safe.
