Malawi suffers another loss in Guinea
Malawi’s chances of their second ever qualification in the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola next year have been dealt a severe blow after their third successive loss to Guinea.
It was a sweet start for Guinea coach Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara who was taking charge of the team for the first after authorities fired expatriate tactician Robert Nouzaret following two back to back losses against Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
Playing at the 28 September Stadium in Conakry on Sunday evening, the Flames threw everything into the game and controlled the better part of the play particularly in the starting stages of the first half and the last part of the second half but lady luck never smiled at them.
Syli Nationale, as Guinea are fondly called, drew first blood in the 24 minutes through Qatar based play maker Pascal Feindouno after a lapse in the defense.
Flames coach Kinnah Phiri tried to replace out-and-out winger Fischer Kondowe in the 40 minutes for Red Lions’ midfielder Dave Banda to strengthen his side but things did not work out for him as the 28-year-old Feindouno was on target again in the 42nd minute after he scored direct from a free kick.
In the second half, Phiri and his backroom staff changed the game approach, first by removing Robert ‘Bagio’ Ngambi for striker Chiukepo Msowoya to add punch in front, where Essau Kanyenda was playing as a sole finisher.
The Flames pinned the hosts forcing them to play in their own half.
Led by captain Peter Mponda and match maker Joseph Kamwendo, Malawi’s man of the match, the Flames came wave after wave and their efforts were finally rewarded, though too late when savoir Chiukepo Msowoya scored he consolation goal.
Msowoya welcomed a well calculated pass from right back and Flames vice captain Elvis Kafoteka to hammer home the consolation goal before in the 90th minute.
Kanyenda, who was the day’s culprit missing over six clear chances, almost sent the filled 28 September Stadium into a cathedral silence a minute later when his shot went wild with only goalkeeper to beat.
Next game for Malawi is against the same Guinea which will be played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre in September.

There are still talented youths that he can try rather than relying on spent soldier in the name of Essau Kanyenda. His form completely dwindled and missing clear chances is a clear sign that he needs to be replaced and the sooner the better. There is a duo of good strikers in the under 23 side. He could try one of them on the bench for the remaining games and am sure with Chiukepo and another fresh leg the flames can perform miracles. Remember miracles still do happen.
