siliSilver Strikers co-coach and former Malawi National Football Team left back Manson Shaba Phiri has died.

The former Flames defender passed away in the wee hours of Thursday at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe after a long illness, his co-coach Lovemore Fazili confirmed.

“Yes, it is with regret that Shaba Phiri has died this morning at Kamuzu Central Hospital and according to family members, burial will be tomorrow [Friday] at Area 18 cemetery in Lilongwe,” Fazili, a former Flames striker, told Nyasa Times in a telephone interview.

Relatives and friends have gathered at his brother’s residence at Kamuzu College of Nursing in Lilongwe where the funeral ceremony is taking place.

Shaba Phiri, who died at the age of 36, was a household name for both Silver Strikers, a club he starred for over a decade and the Flames until he hanged his boots in 2007 before venturing into coaching.

He first deputized former Silver Coach late Felix Nyirongo before taking full charge of the team.

Before joining the bankers, Shaba played for the now defunct Lilongwe based super league side Spearhead where he launched his career.

He was hired last year to co-coach Silver together with Fazili and straightaway led the Lilongwe side to super league championship after years into the wilderness.

The revered Flames and Silver left back is survived by three children and a wife.

Shaba’s death comes barely two years after the club lost another coach former Flames center back ADMARC Tigers skipper Felix Nyirongo.

Silver are scheduled to start its campaign to defend the TNM Super League at Kamuzu Stadium against ambitious Mighty MTL Wanderers this Saturday. But it is still not yet clear whether the game will go ahead or not.
