Staff at National Bus Company demand to meetu Mulli or down tools over salary

Employees of National Bus Company including drivers whose chairman is business magnate Leston Mulli, Managing Director of Mulli Brothers Company, are on strike demanding for their October pay.

The disgruntled workers also demanded for salary increment claiming that the company has not adjusted their salaries for over four years now.

The workers, mainly those working at the company’s head office at Makata in Blantyre, refused to work and did not allow any bus to leave the premise by locking the gates.

During a visit to the company’s premises at the industrial site, workers were seen sitting by the entrance and exit gates.

Their Human Resource Manager, only identified as Mr. Namatete tried to reason with them to return to work, but his effort yield no result.

Most of the employees claimed that since Mulli took over as Chairman of the company they have been paid their salaries in good time.

Some suggested that Mulli should be stripped off Chairmanship, saying he has failed to run the company.

“I have been working with this company for close to four years and I have never received my salary in good time. We always get paid on 10th or 15 of the other month, which is not on for people with families. How do you expect such people survive?,” said one of the employees.

While others admitted that the company is operating on loses as it only have eight operational buses against 200 employees.

“A number of buses are grounded because of misappropriation of funds. And just last week Mulli came to collect K7 million and never bothered to address our concerns.

“We never experienced this when Abraham Simama was the chairman of the company,” said another employee.

They said they would only return to work until they get paid.

However, they returned to work on Wednesday after being promised that they will get paid by the end of this week.

And it also took trouble armed Police officers to ‘restore some order’ at the premise.

Meanwhile, the workers have requested to have an audience with Mulli next week and threatened to boycott work should Mulli fail to appear before them next week.

If you are paid on 10th every month then it makes no difference to be paid on 25th every month. It is still one month.
