I was beating my brain out as to whether Malawi will really let me place an order from my favourite US e-commerce when strange twist of intuition has pushing me here on google just to come across this useful announcement from Standard Bank. Am gonna join you as soon as possible

NBS launched similar product over 6 years ago and no, you don’t have to prearrange with the bank for your account to have forex. I used to buy from Amazon with the NBS visa card using my Kwachas but was limited to an equivalent of $100 spending a day.

This is long overdue. As Malawian, we are failing to access to vital services because of lack of such services as e-commerce. I had to move to another country just to have a bank account that can give me freedom of purchase.

I hope it’s open to any visa card.

Surely there is something missing from this article?

We are told that we will be able to pay foreign vendors for goods and services with the bank’s new Visa card. So (for example) if I want to fly to RSA on South African Airways can I use the card if I have only Malawi Kwacha in my account? Surely, the bit that is missing is that the card holder has to have arranged for their account to be loaded with forex in order that foreign companies can have access to a useful currency, rather than the useless MWK?

Good question. I think the banks settle this among themselves. My understanding is that You’ll pay using whatever you have in your account using the bank’s prevailing exchange rate.
