Student, teacher drown in Lake Malawi

Two people, a student and a teacher have drowned in Lake Malawi in Salima where they had gone on a school trip.

Police say Grace Wilson, 14 from a Muslim Madrassa in Chipasula, Lilongwe, had gone swimming with her friends on a school sponsored trip.

However, she had swayed into deep waters of the lake and was crying for help when her teacher, Osman Chingwalu, 35,  attempted to swim in a bid to rescue her but was swept away in strong currents as well.

Murder

In unrelated development, police in Kasungu are keeping in custody Portiano Kaomba for allegedly shooting to death Tebulo Njulawa.

Police deputy spokesperson in Kasungu Harry Namwaza said Njulawa had gone to a forest for hunting and Kaomba followed him where he shot him to death.

Namwaza alleged Njulawa and Kaomba had issues.

He said the body of Njulawa was riddled with bullet wounds when it was discovered days after he failed to return home.

Namwaza said the police discovered a gun and rounds of ammunition that matched those that gunned down Njulawa.

Kaomba faces murder and illegal possession of a firearm charges according to Namwaza.
